This week, Lambda signed a letter supporting Yeshiva University in their fight to condemn their university from preventing the YU Pride Alliance from organizing as an official undergraduate group. The letter reads as follows:
We, the LGBTQIA+ student organizations of law schools around New York City, categorically condemn the continued attempts of the administration of Yeshiva University (YU) to prevent the YU Pride Alliance from organizing as an official YU undergraduate group.
In June, the Honorable Judge Lynn Kotler rightfully found YU’s actions to violate New York nondiscrimination laws and demanded that the Pride Alliance receive “full equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, and privileges afforded to all other student groups at Yeshiva University.” Rather than comply with this clear instruction, YU has filed an emergency application with the Supreme Court of the United States to stay Judge Kotler’s order so that it can continue its mistreatment of the Pride Alliance.
As future lawyers, YU’s brazen discrimination against LGBTQIA+ students runs counter to the fundamental values of fairness and equality at the core of our profession. This kind of hateful conduct is inexcusable, illegal, and tarnishes YU’s reputation as an institution of higher learning. As queer New Yorkers entering the legal profession, we reject any such anti-queer actions in our City.
We stand with OUTLaw at Cardozo Law School and the many others at Yeshiva University who have called for YU to withdraw its emergency application, to recognize the Pride Alliance as an official student group, and to value LGBTQIA+ students as beloved members of the YU and New York communities.
We are further joined by LGBTQIA+ law student associations at law schools across the country, who are listed below.
In solidarity,
